MUAY THAI BORAN SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa’s national Muay Thai Boran Association is registered with Martial Arts South Africa (MASA) and internationally with the World Muay Thai Federation (WMF), the Kru Muay Thai Association in Thailand, the Association Institute of Thai Martial Arts (AITMA) and has been appointed as the Muay Thai Conservation Centre for South Africa, representing the Institute Conservation Centre of Thailand.

MSA promotes and develops the martial art and sport of Muay Thai Boran, an ancient traditional Thai form of combat, and it dervatives, now practiced by men and women of all ages, internationally as a sport; and form of physical fitness.

Muay Thai Boran combines the use of the eight parts of the body (the fists; elbows; knees and shins) to attack and defend against an opponent by punching; kicking; elbowing and kneeing, as well as incorporating the skills of takedowns, grappling and submission techniques.

Through its affiliation to Martial Arts South Africa, athletes competing within the amateur competitive structures of MSA are able to represent South Africa internationally, the pinnacle of which is at the WMF World Championships held annually in Bangkok, Thailand, and the World Thai Martial Arts Festival held annually in Ayutthaya, Thailand. Instructors are also able to obtain qualifiction internationally through the Kru’s Association of Thailand, the only body recognising instructors of Muay Thai Boran and Muay Thai in Thailand. MSA is the only Muay Thai Boran association recognised in South Africa.

THE NATIONAL TEAM

The MSA team is selected through qualification during the competitive season, the “RED SEASON”.The competitive season for 2012 will start in March.

SIX tournaments, from March to November, are used to select one national champion. A single representative per weight division is selected to represent South Africa in the World Championships. The five preliminary tournaments lead up to the final National Championship called “the Ambassador’s Cup” which is a tribute to the Ambassador of Thailand in South Africa and has its roots from the King’s Cup in Thailand, a tribute to the King of Thailand. MSA also has a professional wing in which athletes compete under the professional wing of the World Muay Thai Federation.
